How to Install Glue Down LVT

Glue LVT 2

Glue down LVT (Luxury Vinyl Tile) is a popular, hardwearing flooring choice across UK homes and commercial spaces. With its seamless finish, water resistance, and high durability, it’s ideal for kitchens, bathrooms, and high-traffic areas. But while it offers long-term benefits, correct installation is critical. This guide walks you through how to install glue down LVT flooring properly—without costly mistakes.

What Is Glue Down LVT?

Unlike click-lock LVT that floats over underlay, glue down LVT is fixed directly to the subfloor using adhesive. It’s commonly used in areas where stability, moisture resistance, and durability are priorities. Key benefits include:

  • Strong, permanent bond
  • Minimal expansion/movement
  • Suitable for underfloor heating
  • Ideal for heavy furniture and commercial use

Tools & Materials You’ll Need

Before you begin, make sure you have the following:

  • LVT flooring planks or tiles
  • Pressure-sensitive or wet-set adhesive (follow manufacturer’s instructions)
  • Notched trowel (usually 1/16″ or 1.6mm)
  • Tape measure
  • Utility knife
  • Straight edge/ruler
  • Flooring roller (34kg recommended for even bonding)
  • Chalk line
  • Spirit level
  • Moisture meter
  • Floor scraper (if removing old adhesive or debris)

Step 1: Prepare the Subfloor

The subfloor must be clean, dry, and level. Whether it’s concrete, plywood, or screed, preparation is key:

  • Remove debris, dust and grease using a vacuum and damp cloth
  • Check for moisture: Readings should be below manufacturer-recommended levels (typically <75% RH)
  • Level the floor: Use a self-levelling compound to fix dips or uneven areas
  • Prime if required: Some adhesives need a primer to ensure proper bonding

Tip: Don’t skip prep. Most installation failures are due to poor subfloor conditions.

Step 2: Acclimate the Flooring

Allow your LVT tiles or planks to acclimatise for at least 24–48 hours in the room they’ll be installed. Keep the room temperature between 18°C to 26°C.

Step 3: Plan Your Layout

Before applying adhesive:

  • Measure the room and mark a central starting line using chalk
  • Dry-lay a few rows to visualise the layout
  • Ensure no awkward slivers (tiles less than half-width) appear at walls or edges

Start from the centre for a symmetrical finish. Always work from the middle outwards.

Step 4: Apply Adhesive

Follow your adhesive instructions carefully:

  • Use a notched trowel to spread the glue evenly
  • Don’t overwork—stick to small areas (about 1–2m² at a time)
  • Observe tack time: Some adhesives need to become tacky before laying LVT, others are wet-set
  • Avoid puddling or overly thick layers

Don’t rush. Incorrect glue application causes lifting and bubbling later on.

Step 5: Lay the LVT Tiles

  • Place each tile carefully, pressing down firmly
  • Use a straight edge to maintain alignment
  • Cut edge pieces with a utility knife using score-and-snap method
  • Leave a small 1–2mm expansion gap at walls

Step 6: Roll the Floor

Once tiles are down:

  • Use a 34kg flooring roller to press the LVT into the adhesive
  • Roll in multiple directions for even bonding
  • Pay extra attention to edges and corners

Step 7: Let It Cure

Allow adhesive to cure fully:

  • Wait 24–48 hours before walking on the floor
  • Avoid moving in furniture or mopping during this period
