Before you even think about laying down your Luxury Vinyl Tile (LVT) flooring, there’s one critical step that can make or break the entire installation: subfloor preparation. A properly prepped subfloor is essential for a smooth, long-lasting finish—skip it, and you could face warping, noise, or adhesive failure.
Here’s what every UK homeowner, DIYer, or installer needs to know:
Why Is Subfloor Prep So Important?
LVT is designed to sit flat and snug. If your subfloor is uneven, damp, or unstable, you’ll get:
- Visible imperfections (like ridges and bumps)
- LVT tiles that won’t lock or bond correctly
- Reduced lifespan and product performance
- Voided manufacturer warranties
What Kind of Subfloor Are You Working With?
Different subfloors require different prep:
| Subfloor Type | Preparation Required |
|---|---|
| Concrete | Must be dry, clean, level. Moisture barrier may be needed. |
| Wooden Floorboards | Ensure boards are flat, secure, and free from bounce/movement. |
| Plywood/Chipboard | Add a 6mm ply underlay if not already level/stable. |
| Existing Tiles/Vinyl | Must be flat, firmly stuck down, and free of wax or polish. |
Key Steps in Subfloor Preparation
1. Clean Thoroughly
Dust, debris, grease or old adhesives must be removed. These will interfere with adhesion and tile placement.
2. Check for Moisture
Use a moisture metre on concrete subfloors. Anything over 75% RH (relative humidity) may require a DPM (damp proof membrane) before installation.
3. Level the Surface
Use a self-levelling compound to fill dips, cracks, or uneven patches. For click LVT, a smooth and level surface is crucial for proper locking.
4. Secure Loose Boards or Panels
If you’re working with timber, ensure every board is screwed down and stable. No creaks, no bounce.
5. Prime If Needed
Some underlays and adhesives require a primer, especially on porous or dusty subfloors.
Tools & Materials You Might Need:
- Spirit level or straight edge
- Moisture metre (especially for concrete)
- Self-levelling compound
- Screws, drill, filler
- Vacuum or broom
- Damp proof membrane (if required)
- Floor primer
Final Checks Before Laying LVT:
- Is the surface flat and smooth?
- Is the subfloor dry and moisture-free?
- Are all loose elements secured and silent?
- Is the area clean and free from contaminants?
If you can confidently answer yes to all of the above—you’re ready to install.
